So how do we handle this to achieve an homogeneous DLP printer brightness distribution and better print results? Find out in the next paragraphs…. So the first step when aiming for a homogeneous light distribution should be to decrease this angle. Additionally, I have implemented a calibration image setting in my Monkeyprint DLP print software to resolve an uneven brightness distribution.
It has two steps. The first is taking a calibration image of your illuminated vat floor which will show the brightness distribution. The second is to use this calibration image to adjust your slice images for a homogeneous brightness distribution. In this process, you will use a digital camera to take an image of your illuminated vat floor.
As a camera is an optical instrument, it will show vignetting itself which needs to be taken into account as well. First, we will extract the vignetting of your camera. To do so, take a photograph of the white surface in a bright, evenly lit surrounding. The result will not be white completely but will tend to get darker towards the corners.
To do this, sample the brightness at the brightest spot using the Color Picker Tool. Create a new layer and fill it with a gray value of minus your sampled value. Set the layer mode to Addition. Place the piece of white paper in your vat. Mount the camera onto your tripod and point it down vertically onto the vat floor. Try to get the vat leveled in the viewfinder.
The vat should appear rectangular with as little distortion as possible. Take an image of the illuminated vat floor. Next, we need to correct the vat floor image for the amount of vignetting that was introduced by your camera. To do so, load the vat floor image into Gimp. Then load the camera vignetting image as a new layer. Invert the camera vignetting image layer and set the layer mode to Addition. This will brighten the vat floor image by the amount of vignetting that was introduced by your camera.
Now, you need to crop your vat floor image. In Gimp, activate the Rectangle Select Tool. In the tool options, set the Aspect Ratio to Fixed and enter your projectors resolution for a full HD projector.
Now, drag a rectangle over the image of the vat floor, that lies just inside of the bright area. In a last step, get rid of the paper texture that might be apparent in your image. The image should not look patchy anymore. This usually requires a precise light intensity measurement setup, and this process can be quite tricky. We present a very simple strategy that does not require an extra sensor for this calibration; A grid of blocks is printed which, starting from halfway, are printed with a gradually darker color.
Effectively a darker color just means that those pixels are turned off for a longer period of time in each refresh period. Depending on the light intensity in the corresponding part of the build table the darker layers will start failing at different heights.
If we precisely measure the height of each block we can accurately map the intensity and generate a corresponding correction map. So why this project? So with that in mind i'm preparing when I got some resin printer in future I can use PrusaSlicer instead of others. I've explored the other slicers and again, no one give me joy, and i feel them unstable, many users slice model on PrusaSlicer just to get those supports and export stl to load in another, that means again PrusaSlicer is on the win side, the problem is they can't slice directly on PrusaSlicer, so, in the end, my project aims to do almost that, configure a printer on PrusaSlicer, eg: EPAX X1, slice, export file, convert SL1 to native printer file and print.
Please note i don't have any resin printer! All my work is virtual and calculated, so, use experimental functions with care! Once things got confirmed a list will show. Note that this procedure estimates both the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters, as well as the parameters of a lens distortion model. Typical calibration results, illustrating the lens distortion model is shown in Figure 3. The actual result of the calibration is displayed below as reference.
We now turn our attention to projector calibration. Following the conclusions of Chapter The Mathematics of Optical Triangulation , we model the projector as an inverse camera i. Under this model, calibration proceeds in a similar manner as with cameras, where correspondences between 3D points world coordinates and projector pixel locations are used to estimate the pinhole model parameters. For camera calibration, we use checkerboard corners as reference world points of known coordinates which are localized in several images to establish pixel correspondences.
In the projector case, we will project a known pattern onto a checkerboard and to record a set of images for each checkerboard pose. The projected pattern is later decoded from the camera images and used to convert from camera coordinates to projector pixel locations. This way, checkerboard corners are identified in the camera images and, with the help of the projected pattern, their locations in projector coordinates are inferred.
Finally, projector-checkerboard correspondences are used to calibrate the projector parameters as it is done for cameras. This calibration method is described with detail in [MT12] and implemented as an opensource calibration and scanning tool. We will use this software for projector and camera calibration when working with structured light scanners in Chapter 3D Scanning with Structured Light. A step-by-step guide of calibration process is given below in Section Projector Calibration.
Almost any digital projector can be used in your 3D scanning projects, since the operating system will simply treat it as an additional display. For building a structured lighting system select a camera with equal or higher resolution than the projector. Otherwise, the recovered model will be limited to the camera resolution. The technologies used in consumer projectors have matured rapidly over the last decade.
Early projectors used an LCD-based spatial light modulator and a metal halide lamp, whereas recent models incorporate a digital micromirror device DMD and LED lighting.
Commercial offerings vary greatly, spanning large units for conference venues to embedded projectors for mobile phones. A variety of technical specifications must be considered when choosing the best projector for your 3D scanning projects. Variations in throw distance i. Digital projectors have a tiered pricing model, with brighter projectors costing significantly more than dimmer ones. Examples are the Optoma and Dell Pico projectors shown in Figure 3. When considering projectors it is important to distinguish between their native and output resolutions.
Native resolution refers to the number of pixels in the projection device i. Ideally, we want both to be the same so that images sent by the operating are displayed by the projector at the same resolution. In this configuration the pixel density in the horizontal and vertical directions are different and images generated by the computer are resampled to match the DMD elements.
We have used pico projectors in structured-light scanners successfully but the native resolution has to be considered to decide the maximum resolution of the projected patterns. While your system will treat the projector as a second display, your development environment may or may not easily support fullscreen display.
